NASFICs, Westercons, and 1632 Minicons are fun. Getting there should be fun too

Traincon 5 from Chicago OR the San Francisco Bay Area to Spikecon and Back

Join your fellow fans on Amtrak for the trip to Spikecon and then back home. We’ll have fun on the train, getting together periodically to discuss SF, the con, or anything that comes to mind. Games and filk, too, if anyone is so inclined – all with old friends and new. While you’re at it, don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The train from the Bay Area (Traincon West) crosses the Sierra Nevada, the one from Chicago (Traincon East) crosses the spectacular Rockies, both in full daylight.

There will be no group reservation for this Traincon; members will need to make their own individual Amtrak reservations; early reservations are recommended for the best prices. As outlined below, the Traincons will arrive in Salt Lake City the night before SpikeCon starts on July 4. Since we assume almost everyone will want to take the post-con tour to Promontory Summit where the Golden Spike united Omaha to Sacramento, meeting in Utah, the return trip will depart Monday night, July 8. Members can sign up for either direction or both.

Due to late-night arrivals and departures, typical transit options between Salt Lake City and Layton will not be available. We are currently investigating options, with the total cost to be shared among all Traincon members (both groups combined). At this time, it appears that the per-person cost may be between $30 and $60 each way for a private shuttle, depending primarily on the number of people who sign up. This could change, however, as we investigate possible alternatives when we have firm membership figures.

Please let us know (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you think you might be interested in one of these Traincons. There is no commitment at this point, but an early indication of interest would help our planning and also gets you on our mailing list for updates. When you contact us, please let us know whether you anticipate joining us in both directions or only one.

Detailed schedules for each Traincon follows:

Traincon West: Outbound: Depart Emeryville, CA, 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, arrive Salt Lake City 3:05 a.m. Thursday, July 4; Return: Depart Salt Lake City 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 8, arrive Emeryville 4:10 p.m. July 9.

Traincon East: Outbound: Depart Chicago Union Station 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, arrive Salt Lake City 11:05 p.m. Wednesday, July 3; Return: Depart Salt Lake City 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, arrive Chicago 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.

These return trip departures, especially for Traincon East, are very late, so we’ll be able to have a double-dead dodo party before we leave. The hotel bar closes at 1 a.m., however, so the Traincon East group will leave for Salt Lake City then and spend the last couple of hours partying in the train station.

We’re looking forward to having a great group and making new friends on the train. We hope you join us.
